Newborn Props and Posing | Examples with Meera, 11 Days New

I wanted to share a little bit of information about my newborn props and posing style, and I thought Meera’s session would be a great example!

Although I strongly believe that the most important qualification to look for in a newborn photographer is their experience and safety, it’s true that style also plays a big role. After all, if you’re going to invest in newborn photos, you want to love the look!

Although I use props and poses to enhance my newborn images, my focus is always on your sweet baby. I think this keeps my work very authentic and grounded and is why my style resonates with a lot of people. That said, here are some of the ways I use newborn props and posing to make your session and finished photos extra special.

Pretty Layers

Outfits and accessories (like flower crowns or bonnets) are an important part of styling your session. But so are the layers in your setup. I like to use soft blankets, lacy or crochet-style throws, and pillows to add extra textural depth and interest.

Swaddles

Most newborns love to be swaddled! One style is to bundle baby up all the way in a little cocoon. I personally prefer a more open wrap like this, where the focus is on baby’s face, but we still get a peek at those precious fingers and toes!

Baskets, Buckets, Beds, and Bassinets

There are so many cute ‘cradle and container’ type props for babies. I love antiquing, and some of my finds make their way into the studio. For baskets and buckets, poses where baby appears to be leaning on the edge with their hands tucked under their chin are perfect! With other props, like prams or bassinets, baby can be comfortably nestled on either their back or tummy.

Stuffies

There is nothing sweeter than a baby snuggling with a stuffed bear, bunny, or other toy! I don’t like to overdo these shots, but having one or two in your collection is so fun.

Do you have any favorite newborn props and posing methods? It’s a good idea to pay attention to what you love. Different photographers have different styles, and you want to find someone who will use poses, props, and accessories in a way that fits your idea of beautiful baby pictures.
