A Perfect Sunset Maternity Session at Beautiful Lake Michigan Beach

I absolutely love the vibe of this sunset maternity session I did recently! I thought there was no better combination than surf and sand, but when you add sunsets and sonograms to the mix…yep, it’s pretty much perfect!

Finding the Perfect Maternity and Newborn Photographer

When this mom-to-be found me she was doing exactly what I recommend for all expectant moms: Search for a newborn photographer while you’re still pregnant! She also knew that she wanted a newborn photographer who did maternity photoshoots as well. It’s so helpful to know these kinds of details when you’re searching, as it allows you to narrow down that enormous list of Google results much faster!

I also personally recommend having the same person who did your maternity photos do your newborn photos too. This isn’t a necessity, but it does offer some unique advantages. For example:

  • You only have to book one photographer–so much less hassle than booking two!
  • Some photographers provide discounted rates if you book a maternity and newborn session at the same time
  • You can feel sure that the photos from both sessions will have a similar feel and will work well together–whether you hope to use them in an album, as wall art, or on Instagram.

Sunset Maternity Session

We chose Lake Michigan Beach as our locale for this sunset maternity session. It’s a bit of a drive from Chicago, but so worth it! The waves and sandy beaches are so peaceful and gorgeous, and the sunset added the perfect touch of color and drama to our photos.

We also decided to do a few different outfit changes during our photoshoot. Outfits add so much dimension to your photos and contribute so much to the mood of your finished artwork. When you change your clothes, you literally change the whole feel of your pictures. This is one reason I recommend at least one outfit change during your maternity session, so you can enjoy the different colors and styles in your photo collection.

I’m so very excited to meet this couple’s little one soon! Stay tuned on the blog, those pictures will be coming!

I know I haven’t posted in a while, but I’m still here!

The past couple of weeks have been incredibly busy with newborn sessions almost every day, along with maternity and milestone sessions mixed in. It has truly been a crazy May so far, and the newborn snuggles will continue all through next week as well.

I absolutely love what I do and enjoy every minute of capturing those precious first days for families. Between shooting daily and nonstop editing, my days have definitely been full.

I also wanted to give everyone a little update on galleries — all sessions photographed through May 4 have been delivered. I’m currently working on proofs from May 5 and this past week, so those proof galleries will be heading out very soon.

Thank you all so much for your patience and support. I can’t wait to share more beautiful sneak peeks with you soon!

And to start things off, here is a beautiful baby boy I recently photographed at 19 days old.

If you’re expecting, it’s always best to reserve your newborn session during your second trimester, as I’m not always able to accommodate last-minute bookings.

A glimpse into my motherhood sessions set up from last week.

For those who missed out or couldn’t make the dates work, I will be extending a limited number of sessions with this same setup. Limited availability is open during the last two weeks of May, as well as select dates in June. These sessions will take place on weekdays, typically in the morning hours.

These can be booked as motherhood sessions, breastfeeding sessions, maternity sessions, or multi-generational portraits including mom and kids, grandma and grandkids, or all three together.

To celebrate mothers throughout May and June, these sessions will be offered at a special seasonal rate. My sessions are never discounted, so this is a rare opportunity to take advantage of this offering. Wardrobe is available for moms and children up to 12 months, and small selection of dresses for girls up to 5T

And keep an eye out — I will also be offering a limited outdoor version of motherhood and breastfeeding sessions in the late afternoon hours during June.

If this has been on your heart, I would love to create something meaningful for you during this season 🫶
